What is Acne?

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. It affects 85% of people aged 12 to 24, says the American Academy of Dermatology.

If you have ever had whiteheads, blackheads, clogged pores that form painful lumps under the skin, you know what acne is.

What Causes Acne Scars and Blotchy Skin?

Acne can leave scars, such as pits or pockmarks in the skin. When blemishes heal, they can leave behind brown, tan or dark pink blotches, called acne hyperpigmentation.

Acne scars can happen when the skin becomes inflamed due to infection.  When bacteria, oil and skin cells cause irritation inside a pore or hair follicle in the skin the body responds. To fight the infection, the body increases the flow of blood and other fluids to the area, causing swelling and warmth.  Inflamed pores can damage nearby healthy skin.

Scarring is more likely after picking at pimples or popping them, because this can increase inflammation and damage to the skin.

Why Does Acne Darken Skin?

Acne hyperpigmentation is a medical term for darker blotches of skin left behind when a blemish heals. Sometimes during the healing process, the new skin that replaces damaged skin has an excess of melanin.  This is the body’s natural pigment that gives eyes, skin, hair their natural color.  When acne heals, the new skin may be darker pink or brown than the original skin.
