<p>What’s your weight loss plan? Here are some quick tips:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Do make a plan, the more you prepare, the more successful you will be.</li><li>Do plan your meals. Create a menu of healthy meals for the week. Take your list to the store and stick to your list.</li><li>Don’t eat unplanned food, stick to your meal plan.</li><li>Do remove any unhealthy foods from your kitchen.</li><li>Don’t leave any unhealthy foods in your refrigerator or cupboard that will temp you to eat them just because they are there.</li><li>Do keep a food diary, keeping a food journal will allow you to see how much you really are consuming.</li><li>Don’t forget to include snacks and drinks in your food journal.</li><li>Do watch your portion size.</li><li>Don’t automatically finish what’s on your plate. Stop eating when you feel satisfied.</li><li>Do eat when you are hungry.</li><li>Don’t eat when you are not hungry.</li><li>Do eat foods that are high in fiber, like non starchy vegetables, almonds and flaxseeds.</li><li>Don’t eat foods high in added sugars.</li><li>Do eat lean protein and healthy fat</li><li>Don’t drink sugary drinks or consume too much alcohol.</li><li>Do make regular exercise part of your daily routine.</li><li>Don’t get less than 7.5 hours of sleep per night.</li><li>Do give yourself credit for making healthy lifestyle choices</li><li>Don’t compare yourself with others, view your progress overtime.</li></ul>

<p>Women, a question: Does your waist measure 35 inches or more? Men, does yours measure 40 inches or more? Your expanding waistline may be sending you a wake-up call.</p>



<p>If you answered yes, you could be at risk for metabolic syndrome, often an early warning sign of more serious disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What you need to know about metabolic syndrome</h2>



<p>Metabolic syndrome is not a disease in itself. Instead, it&#8217;s a health condition that includes a group of risk factors:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list" type="1"><li>Excess abdominal fat &nbsp;</li><li>High blood sugar</li><li>Elevated blood pressure</li><li>High levels of triglycerides</li><li>Low levels of HDL (good cholesterol).</li></ol>



<p>If you have any of these risk factors, you should be under the care of your doctor.</p>



<p>That’s because having just 3 of these risk factors can increase your risk of serious diseases.</p>



<p><strong>The diagnosis for metabolic syndrome is the presence of three or more of these five risk factors. The good news is that you&#8217;ve got an early warning in time to avoid more serious disease.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Symptoms of metabolic syndrome</h2>



<p>You usually don’t have symptoms initially from high blood pressure or high cholesterol. You may not even know you have these conditions.</p>



<p>Often, the only sign you can notice is your expanding waistline.</p>



<p>The best way to find out if you have metabolic syndrome is to meet with your doctor. They will check your&nbsp;blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. It&#8217;s another reason that regular checkups are the key to staying healthy.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Here are 5 simple facts about how to lose weight, starting with what foods to eat and how much.</strong></h3>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>Reduce carbohydrate intake.</strong></h2>



<p>Carbohydrates are also called sugar, starch, or just carbs. To lower your carbs, start by reducing or eliminating sugar and starch from your diet. <strong><br><br>Keep total carbs below 100 grams per day</strong> (or 50 grams of carbs minus fiber).<br><br>Carbs come in many forms.&nbsp; Here’s a quick guide to total carbs in common foods:</p>

<p>Get your daily carbohydrates from non-starchy vegetables and low sugar fruits, not from processed foods, sugar, white flour and starch. Artificial sweeteners (also called sugar alcohols) can impact your total carb count too. <a href="https://optimalwellnessctr.com/contact/">Ask Dr. Keller</a> about how to measure carbs from foods and sweeteners so you can lose weight. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Get the right amount of protein</strong>.&nbsp; </h2>



<p>Guidelines to maintain muscle mass and lose weight suggest a daily total of 0.73 to 1 gram of protein per pound at your current weight.&nbsp;<br><br>Athletes and heavy exercisers should consume 1.5 mgs of protein per pound for weight loss.&nbsp; Protein promotes satiety (feeling satisfied after eating), helps maintain lean body mass, increases thermic effect (energy used to digest food), and decreases the body’s efficiency in storing extra calories as fat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Plan <strong>time restricted eating</strong>.&nbsp; </h2>



<p>Make sure you have at least 12 hours between dinner and breakfast. &nbsp;For example, if you stop eating at 8 pm at night do not eat again until the next morning at 8 am. </p>



<p>Studies show that time restricted eating not only helps with weight loss, but also helps to manage insulin resistance by allowing insulin levels to decrease during the fasting state. &nbsp;Some people benefit from even longer fasting periods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. <strong>Make exercise part of your daily routine.</strong> &nbsp;</h2>



<p>You cannot exercise a bad diet away. &nbsp;But you can improve your metabolism by increasing your lean muscle mass. &nbsp;A combination of aerobic exercise and weightlifting will help you to lose weight. Exercise is even more important in helping you maintain your weight loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. <strong>Get enough sleep.</strong> &nbsp;</h2>



<p>Getting good quality sleep is important. &nbsp;Sleeping less than 7.5 hours per night is associated with weight gain.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Your First Visit</h2>



<p>Your first visit is a 90 to 120 -minute screening medical evaluation with Dr. Keller to determine what food plan is right for you.  You will have a detailed history, a physical exam and an InBody test will be performed. </p>



<p>The InBody test, not only measures your weight and BMI, it also determines your BMR (which is the amount of calories you burn/day if you were to sit all day). This measurement will be invaluable in designing the diet that works for you. In addition The InBody, tells you your % Body Fat, Segmental Lean Muscle, as well as the amount of visceral fat (This is the fat around your organs, which has much greater negative impact on your health.)  </p>



<p>Dr. Keller will go over these results with you at your screening visit. We will repeat the InBody testing at regular intervals, to ensure you are losing fat yet retaining or building muscle. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Your Medical Exam at the Optimal Wellness Medical Weight Loss Center</h2>



<p>Dr. Keller will order laboratory tests to determine if  any underlying medical conditions are impacting your weight, including EKG if indicated.  In addition to looking for underlying medical conditions that can effect your weight, Dr Keller recommends specific genetic testing, to gain insight into weight tendencies and learn how gene variants may influence diet, exercise and treatment options. </p>



<p>Dr. Keller provides an  individualized food plan based on your genetic makeup, metabolic work up and preferences.  She may also suggest lifestyle modifications, and  may also recommend, supplements, medical foods,  meal replacements and or medications to help you reach your correct weight. We will also send you home with &#8220;Get Started&#8221; packet, which will prepare you for starting the weight loss phase of your program.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Weight Loss and Your Metabolism</h2>



<p>If you are not at your correct weight and having trouble getting or staying at your correct weight, you are metabolically resistant.</p>



<p>In order to get to your correct weight and develop metabolic flexibility, the types of foods, the amount, and the timing are all important. It is also important to address your lifestyle, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and engaging in regular activity to help reset your metabolism.</p>



<p>Other factors Dr. Keller will address with you that can influence your weight include medications (that cause weight gain), endocrine disrupters, climate control, social networks, infections, and modern conveniences.</p>



<p>Success comes from adherence to your meal plan. You cannot continue to eat the way you do and expect a different outcome. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Success Looks Like at our Medical Weight Loss Center</h2>



<p>Once you are on  the right food plan you will start to see weight loss.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4 phases of weight loss at our medical weight loss center</h3>



<p><strong>1) Health screening:</strong>  After your initial screening , we will see you back the following week  to begin the weight loss phase. Dr. Keller will review your lab results, your genetic tests and repeat your InBody. Based on your screening visit and preferences we will recommend an easy-to-follow food plan. </p>



<p>In addition, supplements, and or medications, maybe recommended. </p>



<p>Follow-up visits will also address, nutrition, dietary changes, behavior, sleep, exercise, stress reduction, mindfulness, and any issues that may interfere with you adhering to you plan. Your first follow up visit is 60 minutes.</p>



<p><strong>2) Weight loss:</strong> Dr Keller also uses Cognitive Behavioral techniques to help you overcome any obstacles (diet traps) and keep you on track with your weight loss plan. </p>



<p>Your follow up visits are totally individualized to your specific needs and goals.</p>



<p><strong>3) Adapting to new weight:</strong> The next phase of our programs is adapting where you are now close to your goal weight. You gradually introduce more grocery foods and calories while practicing newly learned eating habits and weight management skills. Calories are adjusted so you are no longer losing weight. </p>



<p><strong>4) Maintenance phase: </strong>You continue to practice your new lifestyle skills with continued support and using our proven relapse prevention tools.</p>

<p><strong>Research has shown a link between gut bacteria (microbiota) and obesity.</strong></p>



<p><strong>Could changing the gut microbiota help you lose weight?</strong></p>



<p></p>



<p><strong>A landmark study </strong>conducted by researchers from DuPont Nutrition and Health investigated the effects of the <strong>probiotic strain <em>Bifidobacterium animalisssp. lactis</em>&nbsp;420 (B420)</strong> and dietary fiber on body fat mass and other obesity parameters.</p>



<p>This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical intervention trial in overweight and obese adults <strong>showed clinical evidence that the probiotic B420 with or without dietary fiber can reduce body fat mass, waist circumference, energy intake and body weight compared to placebo.  The  group taking both the probiotic and the prebiotic showed improvement in lean body mass. </strong>In addition levels of Zonulin, a protein associated with “Leaky Gut “and inflammation was found to be reduced in those patients taking B420. The mechanism of how B420 works is not clear, but most likely is multifactorial and may be due in part to a reduction in Zonulin.</p>
